Punjab Govt removing 1700 more trees in Lahore for New Development Projects

The Punjab government has cut nearly 2,200 trees of various development projects in the past two years. This year provisional government cut more than 1700 trees for orange line train project.

   According to documents, the Lahore city lost more than 2100 trees due to three mega projects including Rs 2 billion signal free corridor from Gulberg Liberty roundabout to Shadman via Jail Road, Rs.1.5 billion Lahore canal road widening project from Mall Road under pass to Hurbanspura, more than Rs.160 billion projects from Dera Gujran to Ali Town.

Over 196 trees cut down in The Signal Free Project along the route from Liberty roundabout to Fawara Chowk. For ongoing Lahore Orange Line Train Project provincial government cut down 620 trees on its 27.1km long route from Dera Gujran to Ali Town. The authorities also start cutting down 1300 trees from Mall road to Harbanspura for Canal Road Widening Project.

For the Link Canal Road from University of Punjab Lahore land Via Kareem Block, completed about two years ago, government remove 120 trees, a majority of them of mango.

The local names of trees cut in the wake of various projects include Bakain, Jammin, Lemon, Mulberry, Shareen, Sheesham, Kikar, Rubber Plant, Simal, Berry, Guava, Neem, eucalyptus, Katha/Khair, Phulai, Evergreen and White Siris.

The pollution in Lahore city is on higher side due to various projects these days—mainly the orange line, But the environment situation would improve soon after completion of the projects and new plantation in Punjab Capital.
